Thanks for the mention! Somehow I missed it originally. It seems like you've made an impact with this article as I've seen many Notes talking about disclosing an AI policy.

I'm glad I saw this today of all days. It was meant to be. Very much appreciated!

Thank you! This is clear and helpful. As I write this, a ProWritingAid bot (it's more astute than Grammarly) is gesticulating over in the margin: "ProWritingAid is active and checking for improvements."

In case anyone needs another reason never to use AI for research:

My husband wrote a biography of Vaclav Havel. Today one of his friends emailed him because the friend had asked some AI what Havel would say about getting through hard times. The AI generated a bunch of Havel "quotes" and my husband's friend wondered how accurate they were. He hasn't researched them all but he could immediately tell several were fake.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I honestly haven't touched AI to write anything until the last two posts - I used it to brainstorm ideas with me and proof my first draft, but nothing more. My friends have been telling me about it for a while, but I am honestly a little terrified of the slippery slope... so this was my first test. I do enjoy having someone to bounce business ideas and product ideas off of. All that said, I will be writing a policy so my subscribers know. Feels like the right thing.

Thank you for this great article, Sarah. I just finished revising my About page, so it was perfect timing to add to it.

I do all my own photography and I hate that people sometimes assume it's AI. Of course having the policy doesn't mean people will read it, but I think it should become common practice. Thanks for always being on the cutting edge on our behalf!

If I’m understanding correctly, our options for letting readers know we are “AI free” (as in totally not using it) is to write a post about it or to put it in our about page. (?)

I really appreciate the thoroughness of this article, Sarah. I don't use AI for anything, but it's interesting to hear how Claude has actually served you well as a tool. I appreciate your exploration of the ethics of using AI (or not), and this is inspiring me to draft my own disclosure statement for my 'stack.

I just went over to check out Claude and had the most profound conversation about caring for my elderly dog! I was blown away by the depth of listening and reflection that Claude offered. One of the best conversations i've had in a long time!

Thank you for this. I wrote my own Ai disclosure post and will footnote my future post with it. Very helpful.

This post is so very useful. I am only just dipping my toe/s into AI - as a helpful editor so far - and wondering about the ethics of it all. Feeling uncomfortable but fascinated and a bit excited all at the same time. Now I have some guidelines to follow and I'll be working on a staement for my ABOUT page and archiving this page to use as I go along. Thank you.

Sarah,

I cannot tell you how refreshing this post was to read today! (Is it public? May I share it?)

I have been asking questions no one seems to be able to answer in a few chats, both on Substack and offline, regarding the ethics of AI use. YOU ANSWERED THEM! I am literally exhaling in relief and I plan to archive this post. It is so important. SO important.

And honestly, the fact that you straight-up called out people who use AI to generate content but never transparently disclose that reality felt so validating. I mean, it's wrong to steal! We are all creative people. We all value the work we do, so why would we want to pilfer it from someone else, even if it is from some nebulous digital cloud? To me, that makes AI a sneakier way for many to justify stealing...because there's no way to know from which particular source(s) their information originated.

I'd really love to share your post in these chats. You are speaking into a critical conversation right now, Sarah. Thank you.

I'm so glad this is helpful!

And you're so right about AI being a sneaky way to steal.

Please share this post! I'll take the paywall down for a week so others can access it.

I love love love this article, and I will work on my AI policy as well. Are you suggesting adding it to every article or to your about page? I've tried Claude, as you mentioned it is your fav! I've got to try and have a little convo with him! No one could fully copy what you do, Sarah... I have subscribed to a few Substack growth pubs over the last year, and yours is the only one I didn't cancel.
